Many believe that addiction looks like someone who is always drunk/high and doesn’t have their life together. Addiction can look like someone who has their life completely together, a functioning alcoholic/addict if you will (on the outside), but drinks heavily every weekend to distract from their inability to deal with free time. Addiction can look like someone who shops until they’re in debt severely to help cope with anxiety or stress. Furthermore, addiction impacts the brain in a way that alters the brain chemicals and synapses. That encourages the cycle of addiction. Additionally, addiction can cause a great deal of trauma to others who are near. Individuals growing up in a home where addiction is present, there can be many unhealthy coping mechanisms, manipulation, and hurt. There can also be a great deal of disappointment as the individual suffering from addiction continues to relapse and go through the cycle again. Regardless, you're not alone, there are a lot of recovery resources out there for families of addicts, as well as individuals suffering from addiction themselves. Do not go through this tough journey alone.
